Phloem Water Relations and Translocation1

چکیده
Sunmntary. Satisfactory measurements of phloem water potential of trees can be obtained with the Richards and Ogata psychrometer and the vapor equilibration techniques, although corrections for loss of dry weight and for heating by respiration are required for the vapor equilibrium values. The psychrometer technique is the more satisfactory of the 2 because it requires less time for equilibration, less tissue, and less handlinig of tissue. Phloem water potential of a vellow-popliar tree followed a diurnal pattern quite similar to that of leaves, except that the values were higher (less negative) and changed less than in the leaves. The psychrometer technique permits a different approach to the study of translocation in trees. Measurements of water potential of phloem discs followed by freezing of samples and determination of osmotic potential allows estimation of turgor pressuire in various parts of trees as the difference between osmotic potential and total water potential. This technique was used in evaluating gradients in water potential, osmotic potential, and turgor pressure in red maple trees. The expected gradients in osmotic potential were observed in the phloem, osmotic potential of the cell sap increasing (sap becoming more dilute) down the trunk. However, values of water potential were such that a gradient in turgor pressure apparentlv did not exist at a time when rate of translocation was expected to be high. These results do not support the mass flow theory of translocation favored by many workers.

Three Dimensional Computational Model of Water Movement in Plant Root Growth Zone
Mathematical models of the plant root growth zone already exist, but there is a lack of experimental evidence to support the model results. It is our belief that these models, specifically the Osmotic Model presented by Silk and Wagner [7], need a component representing a pressure-driven bulk flow of water through the phloem to the region in the growth zone where phloem is just beginning to fun...
متن کاملIntact plant MRI for the study of cell water relations, membrane permeability, cell-to-cell and long distance water transport.
Water content and hydraulic conductivity, including transport within cells, over membranes, cell-to-cell, and long-distance xylem and phloem transport, are strongly affected by plant water stress. By being able to measure these transport processes non-invasely in the intact plant situation in relation to the plant (cell) water balance, it will be possible explicitly or implicitly to examine man...
متن کاملUnderstanding the effect of carbon status on stem diameter variations.
BACKGROUND Carbon assimilation and leaf-to-fruit sugar transport are, along with plant water status, the driving mechanisms for fruit growth. An integrated comprehension of the plant water and carbon relationships is therefore essential to better understand water and dry matter accumulation. Variations in stem diameter result from an integrated response to plant water and carbon status and are ...
متن کاملPhloem loading strategies and water relations in trees and herbaceous plants.
Most herbaceous plants employ thermodynamically active mechanisms of phloem loading, whereas in many trees, the mechanism is passive, by diffusion. Considering the different water transport characteristics of herbs and trees, we hypothesized that water relations play a role in the adoption of phloem loading strategies. We measured whole-plant hydraulic conductance (K(p)), osmolality, concentrat...
متن کاملWater relations link carbon and oxygen isotope discrimination to phloem sap sugar concentration in Eucalyptus globulus.
A strong correlation was previously observed between carbon isotope discrimination (Delta(13)C) of phloem sap sugars and phloem sap sugar concentration in the phloem-bleeding tree Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (J. Pate, E. Shedley, D. Arthur, M. Adams [1998] Oecologia 117: 312-322). We hypothesized that correspondence between these two parameters results from covarying responses to plant water po...
